Results for Development (R4D) Nutrition Managing Director, Augustin Flory, visited Ethiopia in early April and met with him on the 4th of April 2019 at 2:00 pm at the Jupiter International Hotel in Addis Ababa to discuss sustainable nutrition financing. 

The College of Health Sciences and College of Agriculture at Debre Markos University hosted the 1st Agriculture, Nutrition and Health Nexus Conference on the theme of “Multi-Sectoral Roles in Nutrition Interventions”

Capacity building is an integral part of the Growth through Nutrition learning agenda strategy. Learning events serve as an opportunity to disseminate research findings as well as build capacity around research and learning among the research and learning communities in Ethiopia. Tufts hosted a half-day learning event on Dec 14 at the Capital Hotel.  During this event, two recent Ph.D. graduates sponsored by USAID ENGINE presented their dissertation topics:

Tufts hosted the 3rd Project Research and Learning Working Group meeting on December 20, 2018 at Save the Children to present and discuss findings from Seasonal Calendar Study conducted by Land O’Lakes as part of the Growth through Nutrition project. In addition, Tufts Senior Learning Advisor presented and discussed the ToR for the working group for the new members from ECSC-SUN joining the platform.  

The Ethiopian Nutrition Society, FONSE, played host to the 8th ANEC Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia this past October. The theme for the conference centered around “Multi-stakeholder nutrition actions in Africa: translating evidence into policies, and programmes for impact” The five-day conference convened nutrition scientists, public health professionals, academics, students and field-based workers from Africa and around the world.

Growth through Nutrition organized a Second Research & Learning Working Group Workshop that brought together various nutrition sensitive and specific program implementers to share learning. The Workshop featured a panel discussion on “Bridging the Gap between Researchers and Policy Makers” with panelists representing the various sectors of academia, civil society, research institutions and international donors.

The International Nutrition and Food Industries Conference was hosted by the Academic Center of Excellence for Human Nutrition, Hawassa University. The Center, recently launched in 2015, hosted various experts working within the field of nutrition research and food industry. Over the course of the conference, several research posters were presented, several project and association experience, and academic curriculum and competency issues were also explored.

Growth Through Nutrition’s Annual Review and Planning Meeting was held August 13-15 at Kaleb Hotel and brought together staff from local NGOs, management and leads from SCI’s offices across Ethiopia as well as staff from project implementing partners PSI, Land o’ Lakes, Jhpiego, World Vision, the Manoff Group and Tufts University. The meeting was held to share progress and lessons on activities conducted in Year II that would serve in finalizing plans for Year III.

Tufts University hosted its third Learning event on July 20th. Dr Shibani Ghosh, Associate Director at Tufts’ Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy presented her research on Mycotoxins and Linear growth retardation and Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation in Pregnancy and Birth outcomes. The event aimed to raise awareness, enhance capacity and promote dissemination for learning and knowledge among multi-sectoral nutrition projects in Ethiopia.
